An off-site search engine optimization practice (SEO) consists of building a network of links or Backlinks leading to a webpage from other recognized sites. To put it simpler, Linkbuilding is a way to increase a website performance by means of quality references on other pages.
What is Linkbuilding for?
The main function of Linkbuilding is to improve a site rating on its page rank, the Google algorithm measuring quality and relevance. The more incoming links to the site, the bigger the authority level or score it gets.
A good Linkbuilding strategy increases the visibility and traffic of a website through organic positioning. For instance, the Workana’s blog for entrepreneurs has got many incoming links from social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin.
If we do a Google search with the keywords Blog+Workana, we’ll see it’s the first organic result because, among other things, it’s got a good page rank thanks to the backlinks.

How is link building done?
The easiest way of Linkbuilding is to use your own digital channels. That is, linking pages in the site, internally and from social networks. For instance, a corporate blog article may have several links to other related articles on the same blog, and the posts on corporate social media may (must) include links to the site.
Another effective way of building a network of backlinks is to resort to Guest posting on other recognized sites, to appear on the newsfeed or interviews at specialized sites or to be mentioned as part of the content of influencers within your field.
There are other ways of getting incoming links, like “Link baiting”, using content pieces as “bait” to catch new visitors, but with the risk of a rather too high bounce rate or drop rate, which might lead to penalties at the page rank.
Good practice in Linkbuilding
- Using an Anchor text, natural and varied. For example, we’ve just used the Keyword “anchor text” to link it to an article from 40defiebre.com. Actually, the three articles above are the same but with a different Anchor text. Doing this is crucial because if all the anchor texts leading to a URL are the same, Google may read it as Spam and apply a penalty.
- Linking to secondary URLs, not to the Home. If there is some page with specific information that might relate more clearly to the anchor text, it’s better to link it to that page and not to the homepage or welcome page. For instance, it’d be more precise to have a backlink leading to the section for Workana freelancers hiring, than to the home.
- Checking external links. Tools such as Google Search Console or Ahrefs can be very helpful to check the anchor texts that other pages use to link to a given site.
- Linking from websites that are well rated at the page rank. For example, your own profiles on the media and recognized sites within your field.
