The World Bank Senior Economist works under the World Bank Chief Economist, who directly reports to World Bank VP. The Chief Economist is a member of the World Bank Leadership Team, working closely with other members of World Bank Front Office and the Global Directors (GDs) of each of the GPs and the principal economic and policy adviser to the World Bank Vice President regarding analytical and advisory services. The office guides strategic priorities and ensures the technical quality of analytical work of the World Bank, bringing the best knowledge to bear on the development problems relevant to the Practice Group.
The World Bank is seeking a Senior Economist to work under the Chief Economist. The Senior Economist will serve as the senior staff and adviser to support the Chief Economist and help run the Chief Economics office by performing under listed duties:

Project overview

Duties and Accountabilities: • Provide intellectual leadership to the Practice Group on economic and policy matters related to the World Bank. • Work closely with the Chief Economist Office and provide inputs to improve the quality of selected high-level World Banks analytical and operational deliverables. • Review and provide feedback to analytical work conducted across the Practice Group. • Support Senior Management, including with briefings on topical issues relevant to the Practice Group. • Coordinate cross-cutting work across the Practice Group and joint work with other Practice Groups of the Bank. • Foster a community of economists across the World Bank GPs and support to promote high-quality policy, analysis, and dialogue on issues relevant to the GPs. • Bring the latest knowledge and analysis on World Bank matters from academia, think tanks, and other external research partners, and strengthen their link to the analytical and policy work of the GPs. • Contribute to the development of country-level and sub-national indicators and data processing methodologies to enlarge the Group’s global repository of jobs-related data, with a focus on indicators for labor demand and economic transformation. • Lead and contribute to technical assistance, capacity building and policy dialogue activities; • Participate in team management and leadership of the country program. • Support the policy dialogue with counterparts on issues relating to private sector development, particularly focusing on creating opportunities for investments supporting economic transformation and employment. • Serve, when needed, as team member or co-ttl/ttl (task team leader) for lending operations, advisory, and analytical work, and contribute to the delivery and quality of financing and knowledge engagements for the region, provide inputs to other global practices (macro, trade and investment, governance, etc.) On private sector related issues. • Support the development and implementation of high-quality AAA and advisory work. Lead/support policy dissemination events with policy makers, stakeholders, and private sector. • Support the dialogue with the cmu and with the region: prepare inputs for wpa discussions, strategic documents such as cpfs, scds and cpsds. • Relationship management: cultivate strategic relationships with government counterparts and other key stakeholders. • Collaboration with IFC: Coordinate and work with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as needed on relevant diagnostics, advisory work and operational activities. • Development Partner Collaboration: Support the partnership with the development partner community and facilitate/participate in formal and informal meetings with key development partners, civil society, private sector representatives, and other stakeholders. Selection Criteria • Minimum of a Master’s degree (Ph.D. Preferred) in economics, Business, Public Policy, or relevant qualifications; with at least five (5) years of relevant professional experience. • Capacity to lead dialogue with senior counterparts and influence policy discussions at the national and subnational level on private sector development issues. • Proven ability to conceptualize, design and implement major projects and to produce major/complex reports or studies. Prior experience with World Bank instruments will be a plus. • Demonstrated team player who can work as a member of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team, motivate and lead group efforts and network effectively across boundaries. • Cross-country knowledge in macro and growth issues and demonstrated ability to link the macro, institutional, and micro-level functional aspects and develop findings/policy recommendations based on credible analysis. • Understanding of relevant cross-sectorial areas and how they are interrelated (e.g. Tax, fiscal, monetary, trade and investment and private sector development policies); and (related) the ability to undertake cross-sectorial work in lending and non-lending operations. • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English is a requirement and fluency in another WBG language is strongly preferred. • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work sensitively in a multi-cultural environment. • Excellent negotiations skills and ability to conduct independent policy discussions on economy and growth with representatives of the government and non-government partners. • A high degree of self-motivation, positive attitude and drive, adaptability and willingness to undertake new tasks as required. • Strong commitment towards teamwork and knowledge sharing; Ability and willingness to coach/mentor more junior staff. • Familiarity with World Bank procedures, operations directives and operations or (for external candidates) a demonstrated willingness to learn quickly about the Bank’s operational norms.
