Refine a Retro Esp32 Enclosure for Fdm Printing (Step/Stl + Pcb Fit)

Published on the August 10, 2026 in Engineering & Manufacturing

About this project

Open

I am looking for an experienced mechanical CAD/product designer to refine an existing, substantially completed enclosure for a compact retro desktop electronic device. The styling is inspired by the 1984 Macintosh, but this is an original interpretation rather than an exact replica.

I will provide:
• The current enclosure CAD/model files
• Reference images for the intended exterior
• The official ES3C28P_3D.step file for the ESP32 PCB, 2.8-inch LCD, and connectors

The supplied ES3C28P STEP file is the final dimensional authority. Please do not use assumed dimensions or substitute board models.

phase 1 objective
produce a functional, attractive two-piece enclosure that i can test-print locally in pla or petg. The design must be practical for normal Fdm printing and preserve the important exterior details in my references.

mechanical requirements
• fit the es3c28p board/display accurately inside the enclosure.
• Align the lcd correctly behind the front screen opening and hide unwanted display/pcb edges.
• Add a correctly positioned USB-C opening with enough clearance for a normal cable plug.
• Retain practical access to the microSD card slot.
• Secure the PCB/display without movement, component interference, or excessive pressure.
• Review the four existing internal mounting/support features. They may be redesigned, but not simply removed unless replaced with a secure printable mounting solution.
• Use practical FDM wall thicknesses, clearances, tolerances, and alignment features.
• Provide a reliable way to join and reopen the front and rear parts, such as screws, inserts, tabs, or another suitable method.
• Minimize difficult supports where practical.

exterior requirements
follow the supplied reference images closely, including:
• compact retro-computer proportions
• soft rounded corners
• correctly proportioned screen opening
• floating l-shaped lower chin
• recessed u-shaped upper/rear notch
• decorative top and side grills
• clean alignment and consistent gaps between the two enclosure parts

scope exclusions
this phase is cad refinement for fdm test printing only. Injection-molding draft/demolding analysis, tooling, mold design, physical manufacturing, electronics, and firmware are not included. Injection-molding Dfm may be discussed later after the printed design is approved.

required deliverables
• separate front and rear step files
• separate front and rear watertight stl files, correctly scaled in millimeters and ready to slice
• editable native cad source file with feature history where supported
• complete assembly model showing the es3c28p board installed
• screenshots/renders showing the exterior, internal mounts, board position, and port access
• brief guidance on print orientation, assembly, tolerances, and any required fasteners/inserts

reviews and acceptance
please include two reasonable revision rounds: one after review of the initial cad and one fit/tolerance adjustment after my first local test print. Final files should have no non-manifold geometry, unintended intersections, or interference with the board and should import successfully into common slicers.

Preferred completion: 5–10 calendar days.

In your proposal, please state:
1. CAD software you will use
2. Relevant pcb/enclosure and fdm experience
3. Examples of similar work
4. Proposed PCB-mounting and two-part assembly method
5. Delivery time and revisions included
6. Whether the native CAD source and post-test-print adjustment are included

This is a fixed-price CAD refinement project, not a new design from scratch.
