Programar envio de correo con php por smtp

Tengo un formulario de cotacto en php que usa la funcion mail() para enviar el correo.
El destinatario siempre lo detecta como spam.
Investigando entendí que es necesario enviar el correo por el servidor SMTP pero no se como hacerlo y necesito que alguien lo resuelva.

El trabajo es instalar la libreria que haga falta en el host y hacer funcionar el envio al correo por smtp.
Eso es todo.
