About the Role

Asahan Tech Partners is looking for a Senior AI Backend Engineer to build reliable backend services and AI-powered applications.

You will work on systems that integrate large language models, APIs, databases and cloud infrastructure. The ideal candidate has strong backend engineering experience and understands how to move AI features from prototypes into secure, scalable production systems.

This is a fully remote opportunity open to candidates residing in the United States or Latin America. Compensation will depend on experience, technical ability, location and overall fit for the role.

Responsibilities
Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services and APIs.
Build production applications that integrate large language models and other AI services.
Develop retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, pipelines using vector databases and document-processing workflows.
Integrate third-party AI platforms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or similar providers.
Create secure systems for authentication, authorisation, data access and API communication.
Design and optimise relational and non-relational databases.
Improve application performance, reliability and scalability.
Deploy and maintain services using cloud platforms and containerised environments.
Implement logging, monitoring, testing and error-handling practices.
Troubleshoot production issues and identify long-term solutions.
Review code and contribute to technical architecture decisions.
Work closely with product managers, frontend developers and other technical team members.
Translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
Document system architecture, APIs and development processes.
Requirements
At least five years of professional backend software development experience.
Strong experience with Python and backend frameworks such as FastAPI, Django or Flask.
Experience designing and developing REST APIs and distributed backend services.
Practical experience integrating large language models into production applications.
Experience with prompt engineering, structured outputs, function calling or AI agent workflows.
Understanding of RAG systems, embeddings, document processing and vector databases.
Experience with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
Familiarity with NoSQL databases, caching systems or message queues.
Experience with at least one major cloud platform, such as AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure.
Experience with Docker, Git and continuous integration and deployment workflows.
Strong understanding of software architecture, security and performance optimisation.
Ability to write clean, maintainable and well-tested code.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
English fluency with the ability to communicate clearly in a remote team.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities and take ownership of assigned projects.
Availability for regular collaboration with team members working in United States time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building ai agents, workflow automation systems or multi-step llm applications.
Experience with vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma or pgvector.
Familiarity with AI frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex or similar tools.
Experience with microservices, event-driven systems or asynchronous processing.
Knowledge of Kubernetes, Terraform or other infrastructure tools.
Experience implementing AI evaluation, observability, cost tracking or model-performance monitoring.
Previous experience working in a distributed international team.
Experience mentoring developers or leading backend technical decisions.
