We are seeking an experienced backend developer to join our team and continue the development of an existing browser-based mmorpg rts game. The project is already in active development with an established
Node.js / TypeScript codebase and game engine.
The game features a shared universe where players manage buildings and units, research technology, move fleets, engage in combat, and compete for territory. A critical aspect of the game is its deterministic, server-authoritative simulation, ensuring consistent results for actions like combat, movement, and resource production, even when players are offline.
The existing engine is built with pure TypeScript and is utilized across server-side systems and the combat simulator. The game specification is comprehensive, detailing systems for fleet movement, resource production, construction and research queues, combat, colonisation, espionage, player protection, territory, and sensors. For instance, fleet travel calculations are based on deterministic coordinates, ship speeds, and technology modifiers.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Collaborating with the existing
Node.js / TypeScript codebase.
- Extending and completing various backend game systems.
- Implementing new game mechanics based on the existing specification.
- Ensuring and maintaining deterministic behavior within the game engine.
- Managing persistent timed events, queues, and fleet movements.
- Integrating game-engine logic with the API and database as required.
- Identifying and resolving bugs and inconsistencies in current systems.
- Developing or maintaining automated tests to validate critical game rules.
- Assisting in preparing the backend for multiplayer testing and eventual production deployment.
This role is focused on backend application architecture and development, not primarily on graphics or frontend game engine work. We are specifically looking for a candidate with strong expertise in TypeScript and
Node.js.
