About this project

Nobel Prize-winning writer V.S. Naipaul discusses these themes in his essay "Reading and Writing" and in his acceptance speech at the Swedish Academy. He quotes Proust's "Against" to illustrate the idea that talent is a kind of memory that allows one to approach and transcribe the "dragging music" of vague memories of truths never known. Naipaul also reflects on the role of luck, hard work and processing in his own writing journey, recounting challenging and traumatic events that brought him closer to or further away from engaging with texts. The text suggests that all writers, even those who are not exceptional, go through a similar process of distilling their experience as readers to maintain their own voice. This autobiographical narrative provides comfort by revealing the complex, sometimes depressing, but always laborious dimension of the writing process.
