Although the term ‘globalization’ was not coined until the second half of the twentieth century, it has a longer pedigree. In the English language, the noun ‘globe’ began to denote ‘the planet’ several hundred years ago, once it was determined that the earth was round. The adjective ‘global’ began to designate ‘world scale’ in the late nineteenth century, in addition to its earlier meaning of ‘spherical’.
The verb ‘globalize’ appeared in the 1940s, together with the word ‘globalism’. ‘Globalization’ first entered a dictionary (of American English) in 1961.8 Notions of ‘globality’, as a condition, have begun to circulate more recently.
