It is undeniable that a small fraction of Orang Asli is able to follow the technological advancement and local researchers agreed that they do not reject ICT but the technology usage among them is very slow compared to other communities in Malaysia. This situation is not in line with the nation’s Vision 2020 or now known as Vision 2025 which one of the keys is to achieve holistic technological exposure to all members of the society. Vision 2025 is getting closer and it is still relevant to be referred after the political revolution and rebranding of the country to New Malaysia.
This vision is seen alongside the IR 4.0 and Society 5.0 revolution where it includes a balance in the improvement of how we live, work, and communicate; it is also likely to change the things we value and the way we value them in the future to become a super-smart society. Then, it well continuous by new National Transformation 2050 (TN50) either in socioeconomic aspects or technological orientation. One of the expectation is Orang Asli group will no longer move in a slow pace in technology usage whereby it requires holistic implementation from various parties such as government, industries, and NGOs.
Therefore, the predominant issue to be discovered comprehensively is the Orang Asli ‘needs’ and identifying 5 issues might able to influence them to use technology. The main contribution projected in this research is to propose a model regarding the technology usage for indigenous focusing on Orang Asli. To achieve it, this research was designed to conduct 3 series of study start with Situational Analysis Study as a preliminary work to understand the ‘needs’ for technology acceptance and continuously use, as well as the barrier of technology usage among Orang Asli; then continued by second study called Requirement Analysis and Define Study aim to uncover constructs of ‘needs’ that can be identified as motivational influence for technology usage and develop the conceptual model; and finally the third study entitled Experimental Prototyping Study to evaluate the conceptual model by identifying the strength and significance of each construct.
From the first study, the finding shows that Orang Asli might attract to use and benefit from technology if it is considering 4 main aspects. Derive from that, requirement elicitation executed and look into the interrelationship between ethnicity, technology usage and motivation from viewpoints of socio-structural, socioeconomic and sociocultural. Afterward, proposed the conceptual model by adopted and adapted the existing conceptual model and adding 5 new constructs.
Finally, the conceptual model was evaluated using a mobile health application prototype and it shows that validated model as for this research is the concern, 2 new constructs have a strong correlation and significance relation. Nevertheless, it is not possible other constructs as the mediator are still relevant, but these require more studies in order to assess the construct in detail. Hence, this study proposes several follow-up studies that can be conducted to further evaluate and measure the conceptual model.
