Develop an Open-Source Scalable Automated Biometric Identification System (Abis)

Published on the February 14, 2026 in IT & Programming

About this project

Open

I propose building an open-source, scalable Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) designed for small to medium-scale deployments, with the capability to scale up to 100 million users. The system will focus on secure biometric template storage, high-speed 1:N matching, and distributed architecture optimized for performance and accuracy. The platform will support biometric modalities such as fingerprint and facial recognition, using modern AI-based feature extraction techniques. It will include a modular microservices architecture built primarily in Go for high concurrency and performance, combined with vector similarity indexing for fast identification and search operations. Key components will include: Biometric template extraction and normalization pipeline, Secure encrypted template storage, High-performance matching engine with scalable indexing, rest-based api for integration with external systems, admin dashboard for monitoring and analytics, role-based access and strict security controls. The system will be open-source to encourage community contribution and transparency, with potential commercialization opportunities in identity verification, financial services, telecom, border control, and government digital ID systems. The long-term vision is to create a Sri Lanka-led open-source biometric infrastructure project that can evolve into a globally competitive identity technology platform.
