CleanAirNow is a pioneering environmental justice initiative focused on addressing chronic air pollution in Southern California’s most impacted industrial neighborhoods—especially those near ports, freeways, warehouses, and oil refineries. These areas, often home to low-income and minority populations, suffer from dangerously high levels of airborne pollutants such as PM2.5, NO₂, and ozone. CleanAirNow empowers residents to take control of their environmental health through a combination of community-led air quality monitoring, public health education, data-driven advocacy, and grassroots policy engagement. Achievements: Successfully installed over 50 community-operated air sensors across the region, providing real-time air quality data accessed by over 10,000 users. Trained more than 200 local residents, students, and leaders in environmental science, health risk communication, and civic engagement. Organized public campaigns that reached over 5,000 residents, linking pollution exposure to respiratory and cardiovascular health risks. Supported policy changes including stricter truck idling laws and increased buffer zones between industrial facilities and schools/homes. Developed a mobile dashboard and reporting tool used by community members to monitor pollution and file over 1,000 environmental complaints. Requirements: To expand its impact, CleanAirNow requires approximately $1.5 million in annual funding for operations, staffing, equipment maintenance, community outreach, and policy advocacy. Technical needs include advanced sensors, data servers, and software upgrades. The project also depends on strong partnerships with public health institutions, environmental scientists, legal experts, and continued participation from local residents.
